Studs to Styling: Our Process for Creating Your Dream Home Gym

You can DIY your home gym, or you can leave it to the professionals.

If you’ve ever walked into a “home gym” and found nothing more than a treadmill shoved into the corner, you know: it’s not exactly inspiring.

At Beachside Custom Gyms, we believe a home gym should be more than just a place to sweat. It should reflect your lifestyle, motivate you to show up consistently, and feel like an intentional extension of your home. That’s why my team and I take every client through a clear, transparent, and creative process, just like you would with any other remodeled or newly built space in your home.

Here’s exactly how we turn a crusty garage, or a lackluster “flex” room into a space you’ll actually want to use every day.
1. Discovery Call (Complimentary)
Tell me your dream and we’ll help you build it. Every project begins with a conversation of your vision. We’ll talk through your fitness and wellness routine, your goals, pain points of your current space or routine, and then what you’d love your space to feel like—not just what equipment it will hold. The equipment selection is fun, and you might already know what you want. We will be able to take your wish list and either confirm that it will work in your space, or come back with suggestions you didn’t even know existed. Whether you’re eyeing a garage, bonus room, full on custom basement fitness & wellness escape, or a backyard studio, this is where the magic starts.
2. Design Consultation & Proposal (Paid)
We move from inspiration to intention. During this step, I’ll meet you onsite (or virtually) to:
  • Measure your space and take reference photos
  • Explore your design preferences—colors, materials, lighting, vibe
  • Build a wishlist of equipment and features
  • Map out how you want to live in the space (your training style, recovery needs, storage solutions.

Afterward, you’ll receive a Design Agreement Proposal, which lays out the scope, deliverables, and path forward based on your wish list. We like to get this to you within 3 business days.
3. Design Concept & Development
With your vision in hand, our team creates a detailed concept that balances beauty, function, and budget. This includes:
  • Lighting design, wall, ceiling, and flooring finishes, and material selections
  • 2D layouts and full 3D renderings
  • Customizations, styling, and decor
  • Equipment selection and procurement
No smoke and mirrors. You’ll see every line item and have the ability to scale up or down. It’s your gym, designed exactly how you want it, and within the budget you feel comfortable with.
4. Design Documentation & Pre-Construction
Now we get our ducks (and dumbbells) in a row. This is where trust is built. Once the design scope is finalized, you’ll receive a fixed-bid contract that shows:
  • Vendor and trade partner quote coordination
  • Transparent, itemized pricing for the build out or installation
  • Overhead, labor, materials, and profit—clearly outlined
  • No vague allowances, no hidden markups
  • Scheduling details for subcontractors and deliveries
Before demo day, we walk the site, lock in selections, and make sure everything is lined up for a smooth, efficient build.
5. Build & Install
From the first swing of the hammer to the last styled accessory, we’re there. This phase includes:
  • Full buildout: drywall, flooring, lighting, electrical, finishes
  • Equipment delivery and installation
  • Styling touches: mirrors, shelving, decor, mounts
  • Final walkthroughs and approvals
Because in the end, it’s not just a gym—it’s your wellness sanctuary. Every rep, every breath, every detail is supported by a space designed with purpose.
