The Challenge
The Lilly Pad was part of a whole-home remodel where the gym space came with one major caveat: the footprint couldn’t change. Any shift in layout would’ve meant cutting into the kitchen, so we had to work within the existing dimensions — a familiar challenge, but one that demanded a clever, performance-first layout.
Our clients had a clear vision: a space that could accommodate high-end smart equipment and maintain a feeling of openness and flow. The hero of the room? The OxeFit Smart Gym — a massive, AI-driven training platform that replaces both a traditional squat rack and cable machine.
The Design Solution
Fitting a piece that large into a compact footprint — without sacrificing functionality or aesthetics — required precision. Rather than placing it on the long wall (which would’ve cut into the walkway and made the room feel claustrophobic), we strategically located it next to the exterior door.
That door’s slight offset gave us just enough clearance for the OxeFit footprint, creating both a visual focal point when entering and a functional zone that still allows for circulation. The final layout also accommodates a Peloton bike, a Hydrow rower, and adjustable dumbbells, offering the client a well-rounded, high-performance setup within a limited space.
The Recovery Deck
Just outside the gym, the recovery patio demanded the same level of spatial problem-solving. The deck size and shape couldn’t be altered, so every inch mattered. We fit a custom built-in sauna, cold plunge, and an LED perimeter-lit pergola into the footprint — creating a seamless outdoor wellness experience that complements the gym interior.
The Look + Feel
Inside, we leaned into gritty, modern, and bold. Charcoal limewash walls lend a moody, tactile finish that contrasts beautifully with the clean lines of the equipment. LED strips run along the top and bottom edges of the mirrored wall, creating a subtle glow that enhances depth and focus. On the opposing wall, a Kobe Merrell art feature brings warmth and personality to the space.
The result is a sophisticated, high-performance micro gym that proves great design isn’t about how much space you have — it’s about how intelligently you use it.
