Where a spec home gym becomes a wellness retreat, and every finish is built to look like it was always part of the house.
The Challenge
A detached fitness ADU in Paradise Valley, built for a buyer no one has met yet. As a spec home, there was no single client to design around, only the expectation that whoever moves in will want the best this town has to offer. The space needed to work for a range of lifestyles, from a former athlete staying sharp to a couple easing into retirement and chasing their grandkids around or hitting the golf course, without ever feeling generic or half considered.
The Design Solution
We built the layout around real training. A full interior gym anchors the space, framed by a black steel and glass garage door that opens the room to the outdoors. Just beyond it, an outdoor functional training patio extends the workout zone with branded turf, built for movement that doesn’t fit neatly indoors. Every detail, from side-mounted garage hardware to recessed lighting, was chosen to keep the space refined rather than clinical.
The Wellness Experience
Tucked into a private courtyard off the primary suite, a sauna and in-ground cold plunge create a quiet moment before the day begins. It is a space meant for recovery as much as performance, close enough to feel like part of the morning routine, private enough to feel like an escape.
The Look + Feel
Warm wood cladding and beam detailing soften the gym’s high ceilings, while 2″ recessed lighting creates an inviting but understated vibe. Powder-coated black hardware, custom dumbbells and plates, and a considered material palette carry the design language of the main house straight through to the ADU. The result reads like sanctuary, not an afterthought bolted onto the side of the property.
