Carr Coastal | Laguna Beach
Where a hardworking home gym becomes a wellness retreat, and every finish is built to look like it was always part of the house.
The Challenge
Carr Coastal is a high-end coastal residence for David and Angela Carr, undergoing a full ground-up rebuild that has effectively reconstructed the entire home. Beachside Custom Gyms was brought in to design a connected gym and wellness suite within a compact footprint shaped by fixed structural realities, load-bearing posts that could not move, a six-inch sewer drain in the wall, and a beam that set the ceiling line.
The Design Solution
The suite was organized as two connected zones: a gym and an adjacent sauna and massage room. In the gym, a custom walnut dumbbell and plate rack anchors the space, paired with a Still Fit Functional Trainer Pro cable machine chosen to do the work of a multifunctional rack without the bulk. The daily Peloton was relocated from the house down the street, with a perfect view of Main Beach.
When field measurements revealed the space was tighter than the original architectural drawings showed, the layout was reworked in real time. A cabinet that no longer fit behind the treadmill was replaced with recessed storage, and a mudroom-style bench with cabinetry was added near the sauna to recover what was lost. A five-foot mirror was placed along the wall by the slider, both to open up the room and to give a functional training surface where the space allowed.

A custom infrared sauna anchors the massage room, finished in thermo aspen.
The Look + Feel
The design pairs warm wood tones with clean, calming finishes: white oak cabinetry and ceiling detail, walnut equipment, lime wash walls with a soft plaster texture, and a two-tone leather palette of ivory in the wellness room and black in the gym. The goal was a space that feels warm and personal, at home with the rest of the house, while still standing on its own.
The result is less like a traditional home gym and more like a private coastal wellness retreat, a space where training, recovery, and the ocean view are intentionally connected.
