For this half-garage transformation in Laguna Beach, our clients — a young, active couple — wanted a space that balanced everyday functionality with high-end design. The goal was to create a Pilates-slash-performance zone that felt intentional, uncluttered, and inspiring — not like a garage.
The Edit: Starting with Purpose
Before we ever touched the design, the project began with a collaboration between our clients and the organizational team at Seaside Organizing. Together, they carefully edited and re-homed everything in the garage to determine what truly served their lifestyle. This foundational step made all the difference — it allowed us to dedicate half of the garage entirely to movement, ensuring the performance zone felt open, balanced, and free of visual noise.
The Transformation: Function Meets Flow
One of the first structural changes was relocating the existing tank water heater. We moved it outside and upgraded to a tankless system, freeing up a key corner and unlocking valuable square footage for equipment and design features.
We also reimagined access and airflow. By changing to an out-swing door to the side yard, the space could breathe, giving the clients the option to keep it open without losing floor area or creating congestion. Above, a ceiling-mounted cassette AC unit ensures comfort year-round, keeping workouts cool in the summer and cozy in the winter.
The Design: Small Footprint, Big Impact
Even though it occupies just half of the garage, this gym packs a serious punch in both performance and luxury.
Three arched mirrors, each backlit with LED glow, create a full boutique-studio experience in front of the Pilates Reformer, reflecting light and movement throughout the space. Across from it, the squat rack wall mirrors that same energy — featuring another backlit mirror, a wall-mounted TV, and floating wood shelves that match the tone and grain of the slatted wall panels. Together, these details merge fitness and interior design into one cohesive aesthetic — sleek, warm, and distinctly Laguna.
The Finish: Elevated Simplicity
To ground the space, we polished the concrete throughout the entire garage, giving it a clean, modern foundation. The performance side received a layer of rubber flooring for function and comfort — blending seamlessly with the adjacent concrete zone. Every decision was about maximizing utility while maintaining a refined, residential feel.
The Result: Calm, Capable, and Completely Custom
The Fitz & Foley gym proves that a smaller footprint doesn’t mean smaller impact. Every inch was reimagined to serve how this couple moves, lives, and recovers — an inspiring balance of minimalism and high performance.
